V.
Pelletier & Sons, as this corporation was initially named,
was formed in 1936 by Victor Pelletier. Victor worked out
of his garage as a plasterer and bricklayer to try and build
a reputation and feed his family. As Victor's kids grew older,
three sons, Norman, Louis, and Robert ventured into business
with him to carry on the Pelletier name.
Each son developed his own division in the corporation. Norman
was the plasterer and Louis was the bricklayer. Robert saw
a promising future in drywall, which was a new product in
the construction business that was quickly becoming the cost-effective
alternative to horsehair plaster. After years of research
and planning on his own, Robert started his own drywall construction
division at V. Pelletier & Sons in 1960. As time went
on and V. Pelletier & Sons grew, so did the facilities
in which they operated from. The size of their current location
enabled V. Pelletier & Sons to develop a secondary business
which allowed them to stock and sell drywall and plaster materials
to smaller contractors in quantities that other lumber yards
could not do. All three brothers continued to run the business
until the early 1980's when both Louis and Norman sold their
shares to Robert.
Robert continued on with the business through the Northeast
construction boom of the 1980's and quickly climbed to being
one of the largest construction and supply companies in the
Northeast. Toward the end of the 1980's, Robert decided that
he had labored long enough in the construction business and
in 1987 divided the contracting and supply business into two,
selling the contracting business to his nephews Louis Jr.
and Jeffrey and keeping the supply business and renaming the
corporation Pelletier's Building Supply. Robert continued
on with the supply business by appointing Jim Duprey as controller
until David had graduated from college.
Once out of college, David developed a five-year business
plan which entailed converting the facility into a full scale
lumber and drywall yard. Lumber, roofing, millwork, cements,
and a 7,000 sq. ft. home center would enable the corporation
to service a larger variety of customers from the commercial
contractor to the do-it-yourselfer. With the aid and expertise
of everyone in the corporation, a relatively smooth transition
was made into the retail/commercial lumber market. Furthering
that move, Pelletier's open its second location in Gardner
in 1998 with a 12,500 sq. ft. retail store and a five-acre
yard.
The corporation has a history of constantly modifying itself
to achieve a dominant presence in the market place. With the
building supply market as volatile and competitive as it is
today, Pelletier's Building Supply will continue to rely on
its mission statement and experienced staff to propel them
into the next century as an innovative and reliable source
for building material.
